Wooden Grain Elevators
This photographic collection of wooden grain elevators and prairie scenery is from approximately 900 towns in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Idaho, Manitoba, Montana, Oregon, North Dakota, and Washington.
Ever since I arrived from the UK in the 1980’s, I have; and perhaps many others have taken for granted the presence of our North American wooden grain elevators. As a photographer, their unique shape, colour and style that individualized every town always caught my attention. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that my pace of life slowed down enough to realize that the towns, hamlets and elevators were virtually evaporating.
I have over 7,000 photographs of these colourful prairie sentinels taken mainly from 1998 onwards, and believe that this B+W and colour collection represents the end of an era.
